The short answer
To get the tracklist of a DJ mix, paste its SoundCloud or YouTube link into CrateWire. We check 1001tracklists for the set first, and when nobody has written it out we pull the audio and listen to it in 30-second windows from start to finish. Everything we name off the audio comes back with the time it starts, so you can jump to the part you were chasing, and a tracklist somebody else published brings whatever cue times its author typed in. Sets run up to 3 hours per scan, and when we have to listen to the whole set, an email tells you the moment it is done.

Looks up the set
We check 1001tracklists for the set, by link first and then by name. A YouTube link skips the link check, because a watch URL carries no words to match a tracklist against, so a YouTube set usually takes the long way round. A link hit means we never touch the audio at all. A name hit comes later, once the audio is already in hand, and it still saves every listen.

Listens to the rest
When nobody has written the set up, we pull the audio and work through it in 30-second windows back to back, so no stretch of the set goes unheard.

Hands you the tracklist
Tracks we picked out of the audio land with the time they start, so you can cue straight to them, and a set that came back from 1001tracklists carries the cue times its author entered. A set we have to listen to takes a while, so the list fills in as we go and an email lands when the listening is finished. A tracklist we found already written up is there and done before you look away.

1001tracklists is not the competition here, it is the first thing we check. The difference shows up on the sets nobody has written up: a warm-up, a livestream, a b2b nobody filmed. That is where a human tracklist does not exist yet and a phone held to a speaker gives up on the blends.

Nobody wins on unreleased tracks. Audio that was never released cannot be fingerprinted, so we leave the name blank and show you where it sits instead. Cue times split the same way: we time everything we listen to, while a tracklist somebody else published carries only the cues that person typed in.

- Do I need an account?
- Yes, a free one. Pasting a link and having it checked for a SoundCloud or YouTube set costs nothing and works signed out, but the scan itself puts real recognition calls on the clock, so it runs against your own account rather than anonymously. A free account covers about one hour-long set a month, no card required.
- Which links work?
- SoundCloud and YouTube. That covers soundcloud.com and the on.soundcloud.com share links the SoundCloud app copies, plus youtube.com, youtu.be and music.youtube.com. Anything else is rejected in the field before it costs you anything. A private SoundCloud link passes that check but cannot be fetched afterwards, so use a public one.
- How long does a scan take?
- It depends on the set. If 1001tracklists already holds it under the link you pasted, the tracklist comes back in seconds and no audio is fetched at all. Otherwise we listen to the whole thing in 30-second windows, which for an hour-long set runs a few minutes. Sets up to 3 hours are accepted per scan. Once we are listening you can close the tab, because an email lands when the tracklist is done.
- Is it free?
- A free account covers about one hour-long set a month, no card required. Every scan reserves at least one minute of that allowance up front and settles against the real length once we know it, so even a short test clip costs you a minute.
- Why do some tracks come back unnamed?
- Fingerprinting can only name audio that already sits in a database. Unreleased tracks, bootlegs and a DJ's own edits do not, so they come back blank. That is a real answer rather than a failure, and the timestamp still shows you where the unnamed track sits, which is usually enough to go and ask.
- Why is there a gap between two IDs?
- A gap means we listened to that stretch and nothing came back named. The windows run back to back with no space between them, so there is no part of the set we skipped. What sits in a gap is either unreleased, edited past recognition, or blended far enough that no 30-second window caught a clean match.
- Can I upload a file instead of a link?
- Yes, in the app. Once you are signed in, the mix scanner takes an audio file as well as a link, which is how you scan a recording that was never posted anywhere public.
